How to test properly
The kit matters less than where and when you run it.
- Lowest occupied level. Place the detector where people spend four or more hours a day, usually a basement bedroom or family room, away from drafts, exterior walls, and heat sources.
- Heating season. October through April is the ideal window in most of Canada. Levels are typically highest when homes are sealed and furnaces run.
- Three months or longer. A 91-day minimum exposure smooths out weather-driven swings and produces a genuine annual average.

How long does a radon test take?
Health Canada's minimum for a decision-grade result is 91 days, and most long-term kits include lab analysis with results back two to three weeks after you mail the detector in. Short-term charcoal kits run two to seven days and serve as a screen. Digital monitors show readings within hours but need several weeks of data before the average means much.
Are digital monitors accurate?
Consumer digital monitors track trends and long-term averages well, which is what matters for a mitigation decision. The Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP) maintains a list of devices that meet its performance standards, so check the list before buying if you plan to rely on the monitor as your primary measurement. For a real estate transaction or a dispute, a lab-analyzed long-term result carries more weight.
What if my result is above 200 Bq/m³?

My neighbour tested low. Do I still need to test?
Yes. Readings vary house to house on the same street, because foundation type, sump design, and how tightly the envelope is sealed matter as much as the soil underneath. Regional data tells you how common elevated readings are nearby; your own kit tells you about your house.
